Oil Company Abandons Wind for… More Oil!

Surprise! Royal Dutch Shell abandoned its 33% stake in the London Array off the coast of Kent, the world’s largest wind harnessing project and at the same time announced it was making a major investment in Canadian Oil exploration.

In an official corporate statement reported originally in The Guardian, Shell said “the decision to sell their portion of the £2 billion pound stake was part of an “ongoing review of projects and investment choices” and was not part of any major rethink about renewables versus other oil and gas projects.” Do they honestly expect us to believe that? Or do they simply not care what we believe or don’t?

Most analysts agree this move effectively kills the project and thus increases our dependence on their core products – oil and gas. It’s the lack of reporting and sheer hubris that galls on this one.

Lets see, profits of £4 billion pounds for the 1st quarter, abandoning a £700 million pound stake in a renewable project to look for oil shale in Canada’s tar sands. Yup… Al Gore was right. Junkies do inject the drugs between their toes when the veins in their arms collapse. We’re talking £700 million against projected profits of £16 billion pounds or a measly 4.4% of an entire year’s profits?!?!?

Where are the politicians?

Where is the outcry?

Where are the media watchdogs sleeping?

Where is the disgust?

It surfaced last Thursday and died… Big oil’s tentacles must have a long financial reach.
